urbs Macedoniae, seu Thraciae, cui a Xenophonte attribuitur, quondam maxima, inter Athon montem et Pallenen urbem a Mecybernâ oppid. 20. stad. teste Suidâ. in Sithonia regione. Rebus omnibus aucta et ornata, quemadmodum de ea, intertia Verrina, scripsit Cicero; quam cum Philippus Macedonum Rex obsideret, nec tamen vi capere posset, eius custodes aurô corrupit, atque hôc modô suae ditioni adiectit. Postea vero ab Atheniensibus deleta fertur: quamvis non desint, qui a Philippo eversam tradant, cum ad ipsum quidam dixisset, Ἀλλ᾿ οὐκ ἂν οἰκῆσαί γε πόλιν ἐκεῖνος δύναιτο τηλικαύτην. Idemque deire dicendum esse, Plut. addit, quae subvertere quidem, perdere, ac diruere posset, erigere vero ac struere minime, l. de cohib. ira.
